“Circle of Water”

On October 16th, 1999, a mural space was given to Agenda 21 in the neighbourhood of Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. It is the first of 5 murals which will be realized in Hamburg by the mural-art-group 'BILDNETZ' and the association 'Peeng e.V.', up to the end of next year. Among others, Mr. Michael Pollmann, city councillor of environmental authority, and Mrs. Sanchez, deputy to the Spanish Consul General in Hamburg, participated in the event. Antonio Perez, a Chilean musician, who lives in Hamburg, took care of a celebratory atmosphere.

Eckhardt Keller, Alvaró Montané
The approximately 125 m² picture dealing with the subject of 'water' was completed in 17 days by the Hamburg artist Eckart Keller and his Spanish / Chilean associate Alvaro Montané from Barcelona. It can be found on the corner of Sartoriusstrasse and Müggenkampstrasse.

Eckart Keller: “It was our concern to lend a mythological tone to the water cycle, a basis for all life-forms known to man. The water goddess emerges with whirls of water on the left side of the picture. The whirls symbolize the swirling subatomic elemental components of all matter, and also the macrostrutures which shape the weather on a global level. The mermaid has a birdlike head as well as octopus arms which spit out water from their tips like fountains. The water splashes throughout the picture which arises from elements which are both atomic particles as well as stars; it splashes onto the realm of civilization, of consumption: a city in a pool of water. A stream of black sewage runs out of the pool, filled with microbes, which also represent a microcosm, and at the same time huge plant forms arise. The sewage transforms itself during the cleaning process into a second mermaid, which completes the cycle after the first figure.”

The two artists intend to create a corresponding mural in Valparaiso, Chile in the spring of 2000.
